Co-operative Funeralcare has announced they are reducing the price of their ‘Simple Funeral’ by 7%. The price of their basic funeral package will decrease by £140, to £1,995 (not including third party costs).

The largest provider of funerals in the UK has taken the decision to set a standard national price for their ‘Simple Funeral’, which they will make public on their website. This will be a big help to people on low incomes trying to find a funeral that’s in their price range. Currently it’s very difficult to find transparent prices online.

This news came through as the East of England Co-operative announced that all 47 of their branches have signed our Fair Funerals pledge

What the Co-op say

Acknowledging that more and more people struggle with the cost of a funeral, their Managing Director Richard Lancaster said:

Losing a loved one is incredibly difficult and decisions about funeral arrangements can be especially hard in a time of grief, particularly when there are concerns about keeping within a tight budget. Our new Simple Funeral has been designed to better meet these needs, making it more affordable without in any way compromising on the quality of service or our industry leading standards of care.

What our campaign wants the Co-operative to do next

The Fair Funerals campaign has welcomed the news. Heather Kennedy, Campaign Manager, says

It’s very encouraging that Co-op Funeral are thinking carefully about the issue of funeral poverty and considering what they can do to make funerals more affordable. If you’re worried about money, having clear, transparent prices is incredibly useful to help you find a funeral you can afford, especially when there are such large differences between what funeral directors charge.

As part of their work in this area, we will be contacting them directly and asking them to sign up to the Fair Funerals pledge, which asks funeral directors to recognise funeral poverty and commit to providing transparent prices so people can find funerals that are within their means.

Funeralcare joins a larger shift within the funeral industry towards greater affordability and transparency. With over 500 funeral directors signed up around the country to our Fair Funerals pledge, we will be encouraging Funeralcare to follow suit.

Funeralcare’s ‘Simple Funeral will now also include:

• further cost reductions of £250 for co-op members
• extended hours of service available
• increased radius of travel
• increased availability for visiting the deceased
• an enhanced quality coffin.
